Confirming a commonly held belief among rival supporters, the poll found almost 18 per cent of Man United fans live in London, with just 14 per cent in Manchester. Similarly, 14 per cent of Liverpool fans live in the capital, compared to 13 per cent on Merseyside. Kop fans are also furthest from the club on average — miles from Anfield — while Aston Villa fans are nearest at 52 miles.
On average, fans will see their team play in the flesh six times a season. However, they will watch them 12 times on TV, according to the Virgin Media poll of 1, supporters.
Their greater enmities are towards Liverpool and Arsenal. Football fans tend to pick a team when they are young and stick to it. The dominance of Manchester United over the past twenty years, during which time it has grown into a vast international superbrand, has swollen its fan numbers in the younger age range of The new proprietors of Man City will be hoping that its performance of the past few years can be sustained and that younger fans will join the club, and stay.
This is its only route to challenge Man U in terms of brand power. Despite all this, it's worth remembering that there is more that unites Man U fans and Man City fans than divides them. This is confirmed by the personality profiles of the two groups. This means that we can look for statistical differences between large groups and find out if certain types of people end up liking, or buying, certain types of things.

First of all, i apologise to mods for making a thread to just get an answer but after i google it and found nothing relevant about this, i decided to ask here where i can get answer from people from Manchester and England.
How even that story started? Abroad it is so many times repeated. I know that City also have tradition and fan base but i can't imagine that they could have more fans in Manchester including whole region, not just city. Thanks for answers. So iirc their was a paper back in the day used these type of figures to say the majority of Uniteds support came from outside of Manchester whereas City got the majority from Manchester and this was miss interpreted as city have more fans in Manchester and from then, the myth grew legs.

City have a smaller Manchester following, and are now gaining a bigger following outside of Manchester, ironically turning into everything they mocked Utd for in the 90s, a stadium which while still often not full, is being filled up by day-trippers.

Like others have said, I think it mainly stems from United having fans everywhere, whereas City fans don't. Also that City fans have been desperate for any slight on United so continually repeat it. My experience in Manchester is that it seems about even but I'd expect the reality to be more red. FujiVice Full Member. Once the Premier League came in and it was this giant celebrity wankathon, as the biggest team in the land we were the whipping boys for bitter louts.
All low class, local, ugly bastards, so that helped the myth. If we got relegated god forbid we'd still get bigger crowds than Emptyhad. Maybe that answers the question! Tarrou Full Member. Joined May 13, Messages 19, Location Sydney.
