His imprisonment is related to driving a stolen car. His father expresses his grief about Luis's imprisonment in Sona, assuring him that he will eventually see a more sympathetic judge. Luis replies that he will never leave Sona [2]. He claims to be friends with "all" the inmates in Sona, while avoiding confrontation with higher members of the prison hierarchy e. This ensures him a certain bearable condition in the prison.
Luis first saw Michael when he came in prison, and was friendly towards him [3]. Luis later revealed the background of James Whistler to Michael and Mahone. He then helps Michael buy some moonshine alcohol to build a small bomb, and also feeds Michael various bits of information regarding the circumstances in Sona.
Luis later confronts Michael about his escape plan and the fact that Luis would not be included, even after all that he had done to help Michael out. Michael initially stands by his decision, explaining that a life on the run is not something he would wish on Luis. However, he softens up a while later, and decided to bring Luis along in the escape [4]. In return, Luis's father was tasked to help out during the getaway. This later proved to be a good decision, as Alphonso effectively saves their lives after Sucre gets held up.

And it means five long months without PB But at least we still have six amazing episodes left.
I've been re-watching PB and have just finished watching season 3 and wondered if we ever found out why Luis "McGrady" Gallego was in Sona? I thought people were sent there if they'd committed something horrific but I don't recall any reference to what he did.
The reason I was wondering this is because Michael hated that T-Bag and Haywire got out of Fox River and couldn't live with them being out, yet he takes McGrady and I don't think he even knows what he did to end up there. It just seems like an oversight on the part of the writers. The woman I want to spend my life with. The woman that I l o v e. McGrady is first hesitant to help Michael. He explains that he survives in Sona by being friends with everyone and that Michael has many enemies.
When Michael guarantees that no one will find out, McGrady agrees. McGrady has continued to be of great assistance to Michael, particularly in borrowing his necklace that allowed Michael to temporarily disable the electricity in Sona.
In a clip of visitation it answers the question of why McGrady is in Sona, claiming that he only robbed a car. The father appeared heartbroken about his son's life going to waste in Sona, and a somber McGrady reminded his father that he will never come back and that he has to accept this. Later in the episode Dirt Nap he offered Michael all the money he had dollars to be let in on the escape, only to be told "You don't want any part of this".
In Under and Out , McGrady again confronts Michael on the subject of the escape, only for Michael to explain that by leaving McGrady behind, he's doing him a favor. Michael says goodbye and they leave.
